A rash of injuries, no odd occurrence to those familiar with the fight game, will keep some of the biggest names in the business idle while they take time to rehabilitate and heal various injuries.
Bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz (along with current UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo and heavyweight title holder Cain Velasquez) will be sidelined for the near future. Cruz is scheduled to undergo surgery for a broken left index finger this week. That delicate surgery could keep Cruz out of action for up to six months, according to ESPN.
“It could be six months, but I’m not planning on six months,” Cruz said. “I’ll say that it will take me eight weeks to recover and 12 weeks to punch again. It has nothing to do with me being ready. That has to do with the UFC booking cards. I can’t book myself on a card if I’m not ready. Bottom line is just finding that opening on a card and having the time right on my hand.”
Cruz was injured while training for an August title defense which he won against Joseph Benvidez, but delayed surgery to take on Scott Jorgensen last month at WEC 53 and retain his title.
Next up for Cruz?
The champ hopes to avenge the only loss of his career – to former WEC featherweight champ Urijah Faber – once Faber has squared off with former title-holder Eddie Wineland at UFC 128 in March.
